Moritz Eggert is a German composer, pianist, and professor of composition born on April 2, 1965, in Heidelberg, Germany. He grew up in Munich, where he began his musical education at the age of six. Eggert's parents were both musicians, and his father was a composer. He studied piano with Karl-Hermann Mrongovius and composition with Wilhelm Killmayer at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. He also studied with Hans Werner Henze at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Eggert's early works were influenced by the music of the Second Viennese School, particularly the music of Arnold Schoenberg. He was also influenced by the music of Frank Zappa, which he discovered as a teenager. Eggert's music is characterized by its eclecticism, combining elements of classical music, rock, jazz, and pop. Eggert's breakthrough work was his opera "Tristanakkord," which premiered in 1993 at the Munich Biennale. The opera is a satirical take on the story of Tristan and Isolde, with a libretto by Eggert and the writer Albert Ostermaier. The opera was a critical and commercial success and established Eggert as one of the leading composers of his generation. Eggert's other notable works include the opera "Freax," which premiered in 1998 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. The opera is a dark comedy about a group of teenagers who form a punk band. The opera was a critical success and was later performed at the Komische Oper Berlin and the Royal Opera House in London. Eggert has also composed a number of orchestral works, including "Hämmerklavier," which premiered in 2000 at the Donaueschingen Festival. The work is a tribute to Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata and features a solo piano part played by Eggert himself. In addition to his work as a composer, Eggert is also a professor of composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. He has also written extensively about music, including a book on the music of Frank Zappa. Eggert's music has been performed by leading orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Ensemble Modern. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Bavarian State Prize for Music in 1998 and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2019. Eggert continues to be an active composer and performer, and his music remains influential in the contemporary classical music world.
