Born on May 5, 1978, in Helsinki, Finland, Hietikko grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a cellist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Hietikko was exposed to classical music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Hietikko's talent for the cello was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He began performing in public at the age of eight and made his debut as a soloist with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 12. Hietikko continued to study the cello throughout his teenage years, and in 1996, he was accepted into the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. During his time at the Sibelius Academy, Hietikko studied under the renowned cellist Arto Noras. He also had the opportunity to work with other world-class musicians, including conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Hietikko's talent and dedication to his craft were evident, and he quickly became one of the most promising young cellists in Finland. After graduating from the Sibelius Academy in 2000, Hietikko began his professional career as a cellist. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, and he began performing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe. In 2002, he was appointed principal cellist of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for six years. During his time with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Hietikko also began to establish himself as a conductor. He studied conducting with Jorma Panula, one of the most respected conducting teachers in the world, and began conducting small ensembles and chamber orchestras. In 2006, he was appointed principal conductor of the Tapiola Sinfonietta, a position he held for four years. Hietikko's career as a conductor continued to grow, and he began to conduct larger orchestras and opera companies. In 2010, he made his debut as a conductor at the Finnish National Opera, conducting a production of Mozart's Don Giovanni. The production was a critical and commercial success, and Hietikko was praised for his sensitive and nuanced interpretation of the score. In addition to his work as a conductor, Hietikko continued to perform as a cellist. He has performed as a soloist with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also recorded several albums as a soloist, including a critically acclaimed recording of the Bach Cello Suites. Throughout his career, Hietikko has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a musician.
