Richard Levitt was born on May 12, 1975, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Levitt showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Levitt's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Martha Argerich, at the age of six. Argerich recognized Levitt's potential and took him under her wing, providing him with intensive training and guidance. Levitt's talent continued to grow, and he began performing in public at the age of eight. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of ten, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. The performance was a huge success, and Levitt received critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musicality. Over the years, Levitt continued to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also performed at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. Levitt's repertoire was vast and included works by some of the greatest composers in history, such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Mozart. He was particularly known for his interpretations of Chopin's music, which he played with great sensitivity and emotion. In addition to his performances, Levitt was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 50 albums throughout his career, including complete cycles of the piano works of Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart. His recordings were highly acclaimed and won numerous awards, including several Grammys. Levitt was also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He taught at several prestigious music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was known for his rigorous teaching style and for pushing his students to achieve their full potential. Throughout his career, Levitt received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. He was awarded the Order of Merit by the Austrian government in recognition of his services to music, and he was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the United States government. Sadly, Levitt's career was cut short when he passed away suddenly in 2015 at the age of 40. His death was a great loss to the classical music world, and he was mourned by fans and colleagues around the world. Despite his untimely death, Levitt's legacy lives on through his recordings and the many students he taught and inspired.
