Samuel Moriarty was born on May 15, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Moriarty showed a natural talent for music, and he began taking piano lessons at the age of five. As he grew older, Moriarty became increasingly interested in classical music, and he began studying the works of composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. He also began taking lessons in other instruments, including the violin and the cello. In 2003, Moriarty was accepted into the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied piano under the renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky.
