His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Cornelis showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Cornelis received his formal music education at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of some of the most prominent music teachers of the time. He graduated with honors in 1978 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Over the next few years, Cornelis performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, playing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. He was known for his virtuosic playing style and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. One of Cornelis's most memorable performances was his rendition of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1985.
