Born in Edinburgh in 1965, McGuinness grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a pianist and music teacher. McGuinness began playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the harpsichord and organ. McGuinness studied music at the University of Edinburgh, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors. He then went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he earned a Master of Music degree in historical performance. During his time at the Royal College of Music, McGuinness studied under the renowned harpsichordist and conductor Christopher Hogwood. After completing his studies, McGuinness began his career as a freelance musician, performing with a variety of ensembles and orchestras. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and versatile musician, and his talents were in high demand. In 1990, he co-founded the ensemble Concerto Caledonia, which specializes in performing Scottish baroque music. The ensemble has since become one of the leading early music groups in Scotland, and McGuinness has served as its artistic director and conductor for over 30 years. Throughout his career, McGuinness has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
