Role:Composer PerformerJoseph Harchanko was a classical music composer born on May 12, 1925, in Lviv, Ukraine. He was the youngest of four children and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Joseph showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. At the age of six, Joseph began taking formal piano lessons with his mother. He quickly showed a talent for music and began composing his own pieces. By the age of ten, he had already written several piano pieces and had begun studying composition with a local teacher. In 1941, when Joseph was sixteen years old, Lviv was occupied by the Nazis. Joseph and his family were forced to flee their home and go into hiding. During this time, Joseph continued to study music and compose, often in secret. He also played the piano in local cafes to earn money for his family. After the war, Joseph and his family moved to Germany, where he continued his music studies. He studied composition with the renowned composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann and piano with the pianist and composer Carl Seemann. During this time, Joseph also began to perform his own compositions in public. In 1950, Joseph immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. He continued his music studies at the Juilliard School, where he studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and piano with Rosina Lhévinne. He also studied conducting with Jean Morel. In the 1950s and 1960s, Joseph began to establish himself as a composer. He wrote music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His music was often characterized by its lyricism, rhythmic vitality, and use of folk melodies. He also incorporated elements of Ukrainian and Jewish music into his compositions. One of Joseph's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1956. The concerto is a virtuosic work that showcases the pianist's technical abilities. It is also notable for its use of Ukrainian folk melodies, which are woven into the fabric of the music. Another notable work by Joseph is his String Quartet No. 1, which he composed in 1962. The quartet is a lyrical and expressive work that showcases Joseph's gift for melody. It is also notable for its use of unconventional harmonies and rhythms. In addition to his work as a composer, Joseph was also a respected music educator. He taught composition and piano at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. He also served as the music director of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America. Joseph continued to compose and perform music throughout his life. He wrote music for a variety of ensembles, including orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments.
