Álvarez's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied at the Madrid Conservatory of Music. He was a gifted student and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent. He won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious National Piano Competition in Spain. After completing his studies, Álvarez began performing in concerts and recitals across Europe. In 1990, Álvarez made his debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. This marked the beginning of his international career, and he went on to perform in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna State Opera.
