The Columbus State University Wind Ensemble is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over three decades. Founded in 1984, the ensemble has become a staple of the Columbus State University's Schwob School of Music, where it is based. The ensemble was founded by Dr. Robert Rumbelow, who served as its conductor for over 20 years. Dr. Rumbelow was a highly respected music educator and conductor, and his vision for the ensemble was to create a group that would showcase the talents of the university's music students while also providing them with a platform to develop their skills and gain valuable performance experience. Over the years, the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble has grown in size and reputation, attracting some of the most talented music students from across the country. Today, the ensemble is made up of over 50 members, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members and community musicians. The ensemble's main members include its conductor, Dr. Jamie L. Nix, who has been leading the group since 2006. Dr. Nix is a highly accomplished conductor and music educator, and he has led the ensemble to numerous accolades and awards over the years. Other key members of the ensemble include its principal players, who are responsible for leading their respective sections and ensuring that the group performs at the highest level possible. One of the highlights of the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble's history was its performance at the 2007 College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Southern Division Conference. The ensemble was one of only six groups selected to perform at the conference, which is considered one of the most prestigious events in the world of collegiate wind bands. The ensemble's performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, and it helped to cement the group's reputation as one of the top wind ensembles in the country. In addition to its performance at the CBDNA conference, the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble has also been recognized with numerous other awards and honors over the years. These include multiple invitations to perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) In-Service Conference, as well as performances at the National Band Association (NBA) Southern Division Conference and the American Bandmasters Association (ABA) National Convention. The ensemble has also released several critically acclaimed recordings, including its most recent album, "The Columbus State University Wind Ensemble Live at the RiverCenter," which was released in 2019. The album features live recordings of some of the ensemble's most memorable performances, including works by composers such as John Mackey, Frank Ticheli, and David Maslanka. Overall, the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble is a testament to the power of music education and the dedication of its members. Through its exceptional performances and commitment to excellence, the ensemble has become a beloved institution at Columbus State University and a shining example of the best that classical music has to offer.
