The Argento Chamber Ensemble is a classical music group that was founded in 2000 by conductor Michel Galante. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming and performances of contemporary classical music. The group's name, "Argento," is Italian for "silver," and reflects the ensemble's commitment to creating music that is both beautiful and valuable. The ensemble is made up of a core group of musicians, including flutist Carol Wincenc, clarinetist Carol McGonnell, violinist Miranda Cuckson, violist Stephanie Griffin, cellist Michael Nicolas, and pianist Blair McMillen. The Argento Chamber Ensemble has performed at major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic. The group has also collaborated with some of the world's leading composers, including Elliott Carter, John Zorn, and George Crumb. One of the highlights of the Argento Chamber Ensemble's career was their performance of Elliott Carter's "Double Concerto" at Carnegie Hall in 2008. The piece, which was written specifically for the ensemble, features two soloists (flute and clarinet) and a chamber orchestra. The performance was widely praised for its technical precision and emotional depth. In addition to their performances, the Argento Chamber Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 2003, the group was awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The following year, they were named the "Best New Classical Ensemble" by Time Out New York.
