Alan Umstead was born on May 12, 1985, in Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up in a musical family, with both of his parents being professional musicians. His father was a renowned cellist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Alan was exposed to classical music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Alan's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University when he was just six years old. He studied under the tutelage of renowned violinist, Dr. Carolyn Huebl, and quickly became one of her star pupils. Alan's dedication and hard work paid off, and he won his first competition at the age of eight. Throughout his childhood, Alan continued to excel in his studies and performances. He won numerous competitions and was invited to perform at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. At the age of 16, he was accepted into the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the guidance of Itzhak Perlman. During his time at Juilliard, Alan continued to impress audiences and judges alike. He won several competitions, including the prestigious Concerto Competition, which earned him the opportunity to perform with the Juilliard Orchestra. He also received the Dorothy DeLay Scholarship, which is awarded to the most promising violin students at Juilliard. After graduating from Juilliard with honors, Alan began his professional career as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and versatile violinists of his generation. He performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his solo performances, Alan was also a sought-after chamber musician. He was a member of several ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He also collaborated with other musicians, such as pianist Lang Lang and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Throughout his career, Alan received numerous awards and accolades. He was a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. He also won the Naumburg International Violin Competition, which is one of the most prestigious competitions for young violinists. In addition to his performances, Alan was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at several music schools, including the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. He was known for his patient and nurturing teaching style, and many of his students went on to have successful careers in music. Tragically, Alan's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the age of 32. He passed away on June 15, 2017, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest violinists of his generation.
