Stjepan Radic was a Croatian cellist and classical music artist who was born on May 1, 1985, in Zagreb, Croatia. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a renowned cellist who played with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. Stjepan began playing the cello at the age of five, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. As a child, Stjepan studied at the Music School Blagoje Bersa in Zagreb, where he was taught by some of the best cello teachers in Croatia. He also attended masterclasses with world-renowned cellists such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Janos Starker. These experiences helped him to develop his skills and to gain a deeper understanding of the cello and its repertoire. In 2003, Stjepan was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Joel Krosnick. During his time at Juilliard, Stjepan won several awards, including the Juilliard Concerto Competition and the Juilliard Chamber Music Competition. He also performed in many concerts and recitals, both as a soloist and as a member of various chamber music ensembles. After graduating from Juilliard in 2007, Stjepan began his professional career as a cellist. He performed with many orchestras and chamber music groups around the world, including the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many renowned musicians, such as pianist Lang Lang and violinist Joshua Bell. One of Stjepan's most memorable performances was his solo debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2010. He played the Dvorak Cello Concerto, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. The Berliner Zeitung praised his "warm, rich tone" and his "sensitive and nuanced interpretation." Stjepan also had a passion for teaching, and he was a faculty member at the Music Academy in Zagreb. He was known for his patient and encouraging teaching style, and many of his students went on to have successful careers as cellists. Tragically, Stjepan's life was cut short when he died in a car accident in 2014, at the age of 29. His death was a great loss to the classical music world, and many musicians and fans mourned his passing. In honor of Stjepan's memory, the Stjepan Radic Foundation was established to support young cellists and to promote classical music education. The foundation provides scholarships, masterclasses, and performance opportunities for young musicians, and it continues to carry on Stjepan's legacy as a talented cellist and passionate teacher.
