Role:EnsemblePeriod:ModernGenre:ChamberVocalCollage New Music is a classical music ensemble based in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1972 by composer and conductor Frank Epstein, the group has become known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Epstein, who was the timpanist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the time, wanted to create a platform for new and experimental music that was not being performed by traditional orchestras. He gathered a group of like-minded musicians, including members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and other local ensembles, and Collage New Music was born. The ensemble's early years were marked by a focus on contemporary music, with a particular emphasis on works by living composers. Epstein and his colleagues were committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new sounds and techniques. Over the years, Collage New Music has grown and evolved, but its commitment to contemporary music has remained a constant. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered countless new works, and has collaborated with some of the most exciting and innovative composers of our time. One of the hallmarks of Collage New Music's programming is its willingness to mix genres and styles. The ensemble has performed works that blend classical music with jazz, rock, and other genres, and has collaborated with musicians from a wide range of backgrounds. Collage New Music has also been recognized for its commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble has worked with students of all ages, from elementary school through college, and has offered workshops, masterclasses, and other educational programs. Throughout its history, Collage New Music has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. The ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Some of the highlights of Collage New Music's performances over the years include: - The premiere of John Harbison's "String Trio" in 1976, which was later recorded by the ensemble and released on the New World Records label. - A performance of Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians" in 1980, which was one of the first performances of the piece in the United States. - A collaboration with jazz pianist Chick Corea in 1986, which resulted in a performance of Corea's "Children's Songs" arranged for chamber ensemble. - The premiere of John Adams' "Chamber Symphony" in 1992, which was later recorded by the ensemble and released on the Nonesuch label. - A performance of George Crumb's "Black Angels" in 2001, which was accompanied by a visual installation by artist Anna Schuleit. - A collaboration with the Boston Ballet in 2010, which resulted in a performance of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" arranged for chamber ensemble. Today, Collage New Music continues to be a vital and innovative force in the world of classical music. The ensemble's commitment to contemporary music and its willingness to explore new sounds and techniques make it a valuable resource for composers, performers, and audiences alike.More....
