Jacques Castérède was a French composer and pianist who was born on April 10, 1926, in Paris, France. He was the son of a composer and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. Castérède grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he won several prizes for his compositions. Castérède's early works were influenced by the neoclassical style of composers such as Stravinsky and Hindemith. He was also interested in jazz and incorporated elements of it into his music. In the 1950s, Castérède began to experiment with serialism, a technique that uses a series of notes to create a musical theme. He also explored electronic music and wrote several pieces for tape. One of Castérède's most famous works is his Concerto for Marimba and Strings, which he composed in 1953. The piece is known for its virtuosic marimba solos and its use of jazz rhythms. Castérède also wrote several other concertos, including ones for piano, trumpet, and saxophone. In addition to his concertos, Castérède wrote many chamber music pieces, including string quartets, sonatas, and trios. He also wrote several works for orchestra, including his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1960. Castérède was a prolific composer, and his works were performed by many famous musicians, including pianist Aldo Ciccolini and saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix. He also taught composition at the Paris Conservatory and was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Throughout his career, Castérède continued to experiment with different styles and techniques. He wrote music for films and television, and his works were often used in dance performances. He was also interested in the music of other cultures and incorporated elements of African and Asian music into his compositions. Castérède died on April 6, 2014, at the age of 87. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential music that continues to be performed and studied today.
