Ensemble Contemporain Montréal+ (ECM+) is a Canadian classical music ensemble that specializes in contemporary music. The ensemble was founded in 1987 by conductor and composer Véronique Lacroix, who remains its artistic director to this day. The ensemble is based in Montreal, Quebec, and is known for its innovative programming and collaborations with composers and performers from around the world. ECM+ was founded with the goal of promoting contemporary music and providing a platform for Canadian composers to showcase their work. The ensemble's early performances were focused on works by Canadian composers, but over time, it has expanded its repertoire to include works by composers from around the world. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of performers, including dancers, visual artists, and actors. The ensemble's main members are its artistic director, Véronique Lacroix, and its core group of musicians, which includes flutist Marie-Andrée Benny, clarinetist André Moisan, violinist Chantal Juillet, cellist Stéphane Tétreault, and pianist Brigitte Poulin. The ensemble also works with a rotating cast of guest performers, including composers, conductors, and soloists. ECM+ has performed at a number of major festivals and venues around the world, including the Festival de musique de chambre de Montréal, the Festival international de musique actuelle de Victoriaville, and the Festival de musique de Besançon. The ensemble has also performed at major concert halls in Canada, including the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and the Maison symphonique de Montréal. One of the highlights of ECM+'s career was its performance of John Adams' "Harmonielehre" at the Festival de musique de chambre de Montréal in 2015. The performance was widely praised for its energy and precision, and it helped to cement the ensemble's reputation as one of the leading contemporary music ensembles in Canada. ECM+ has also been recognized with a number of awards and honors over the years. In 1999, the ensemble was awarded the Prix Opus for "Best Concert of the Year" for its performance of works by Canadian composer Gilles Tremblay. In 2007, the ensemble was awarded the Prix Opus for "Discovery of the Year" for its work promoting contemporary music in Quebec. And in 2017, the ensemble was awarded the Prix Opus for "Concert of the Year - Modern and Contemporary Music" for its performance of works by Canadian composer Ana Sokolović. Overall, ECM+ has had a significant impact on the contemporary music scene in Canada and beyond. The ensemble's commitment to promoting new and innovative works has helped to push the boundaries of classical music and to inspire a new generation of composers and performers. With its talented musicians and visionary leadership, ECM+ is sure to continue making waves in the world of contemporary music for years to come.
