Rosengren began his professional career in the late 1950s, playing with various jazz bands in Sweden. In 1960, he joined the Swedish Radio Jazz Group, which was led by pianist Bengt Hallberg. He played with the group for several years and recorded several albums with them. In the mid-1960s, Rosengren moved to New York City to study at the Manhattan School of Music. While in New York, he played with several jazz musicians, including Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, and Clark Terry. He also recorded his first album as a leader, "Notes from Underground," which was released in 1965. After returning to Sweden in the late 1960s, Rosengren continued to play with various jazz groups and recorded several albums as a leader. In 1972, he was awarded the Swedish Jazz Federation's "Jazz Musician of the Year" award.
