Margherita Carosio was an Italian soprano who was born on September 12, 1908, in Genoa, Italy. She was the daughter of a music teacher and began her musical training at a young age. Her father recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Carosio made her operatic debut in 1926 at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, where she sang the role of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto. She quickly gained recognition for her beautiful voice and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. In 1928, Carosio made her debut at La Scala in Milan, where she sang the role of Norina in Donizetti's Don Pasquale. Her performance was a great success, and she was invited to perform at other major opera houses throughout Italy. Carosio's international career began in 1930 when she made her debut at the Royal Opera House in London, where she sang the role of Gilda in Rigoletto. She was also invited to perform at the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Throughout her career, Carosio was known for her beautiful voice, her impeccable technique, and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. She was particularly renowned for her performances of Mozart's operas, and she was considered one of the greatest interpreters of the role of Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro. Carosio's career was interrupted by World War II, during which she continued to perform in Italy despite the difficult conditions. After the war, she resumed her international career and continued to perform until the early 1960s. Carosio received many awards and honors throughout her career, including the title of "Commendatore" from the Italian government in recognition of her contributions to the arts. She was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Carosio retired from the stage in 1962 and devoted herself to teaching. She taught at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and at the Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. She also gave masterclasses throughout Italy and Europe. Margherita Carosio died on November 22, 2005, at the age of 97. She was remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century, and her recordings continue to be admired for their beauty and emotional depth.
