The ensemble was founded in 1969 by Professor Allan Stephenson, who was the head of the Music Department at Stellenbosch University at the time. The ensemble was initially formed as a small chamber orchestra, but it has since grown to become one of the most respected and renowned classical music ensembles in South Africa. The ensemble's main members are students and alumni of Stellenbosch University, as well as professional musicians from the surrounding area. The ensemble is led by conductor Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg, who has been with the ensemble since 2009. Under his leadership, the ensemble has continued to grow and develop, and has become known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. Over the years, Stellenbosch University Camerata has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in South Africa, including the Cape Town City Hall, the Baxter Theatre, and the Artscape Theatre. The ensemble has also performed at numerous festivals and events, both in South Africa and abroad. Some of the highlights of the ensemble's major performances include: - In 2010, Stellenbosch University Camerata performed at the World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China. The ensemble won a gold medal in the Chamber Choirs category, and was also awarded the title of "Choir of the World" in the Folklore category. - In 2012, the ensemble performed at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa. The performance was a tribute to the late South African composer Stefans Grové, and featured a selection of his works. - In 2014, Stellenbosch University Camerata performed at the Cape Town International Music Festival. The performance was a collaboration with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, and featured works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. - In 2016, the ensemble performed at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival.
