The Athena Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is named after the Greek goddess Athena, who was known for her wisdom, courage, and artistic talents. The founding members of the Athena Ensemble were violinist Susan Waterbury, cellist Elizabeth Anderson, and pianist Gail Niwa. All three musicians had extensive experience performing in various orchestras and chamber groups, and they were eager to create a new ensemble that would allow them to explore a wider range of repertoire and collaborate with other talented musicians. Over the years, the Athena Ensemble has expanded to include a rotating roster of musicians, including some of the most accomplished performers in the classical music world. The ensemble's core members, however, have remained the same: Susan Waterbury on violin, Elizabeth Anderson on cello, and Gail Niwa on piano. One of the highlights of the Athena Ensemble's career was their performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 2001. The ensemble was invited to perform as part of the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage series, which showcases some of the most talented performers in the world. The Athena Ensemble's performance was a huge success, and they received a standing ovation from the audience. Another notable performance by the Athena Ensemble was their appearance at the Aspen Music Festival in 2005. The festival is one of the most prestigious classical music events in the world, and the Athena Ensemble was honored to be invited to perform. Their performance was widely praised by critics and audience members alike, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading chamber groups in the United States. In addition to their performances, the Athena Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2003, they were awarded the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant, which allowed them to work with young musicians in schools and community centers throughout the United States. They have also been featured on several recordings, including a critically acclaimed album of works by Brahms and Schumann. Despite their many accomplishments, the members of the Athena Ensemble remain committed to their original mission of exploring new repertoire and collaborating with other talented musicians. They continue to perform regularly at venues throughout the United States and around the world, and they are widely regarded as one of the most innovative and exciting chamber groups in the classical music world.
