He later continued his studies at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied composition with Joseph Marx and conducting with his father, Karl Böhm. During this time, he also worked as a répétiteur at the Vienna State Opera, where he gained valuable experience in conducting. In 1950, Böhm made his debut as a conductor at the Salzburg Festival, where he conducted Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." This performance marked the beginning of his successful career as a conductor. He went on to conduct many renowned orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Böhm's compositions were heavily influenced by the Second Viennese School, a group of composers that included Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern. His early works were characterized by atonal and serialist techniques, but he later moved towards a more tonal style. Some of his most notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1956, and his opera "Der Herr Nordwind," which premiered in 1963. In 1981, he founded the organization Menschen für Menschen (People for People), which aimed to alleviate poverty in Ethiopia.
