Merel Junge is a Dutch classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a talented violinist and conductor. Born on May 22, 1987, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Merel showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. Her parents, both musicians themselves, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Merel's early musical education was at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned violinist Vera Beths. She later went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in violin performance. Merel's talent as a violinist was evident from an early age, and she quickly gained recognition for her skill and musicality. In 2006, she won first prize at the Princess Christina Competition, a prestigious music competition for young musicians in the Netherlands. This was followed by a series of other awards and accolades, including the Kersjes Prize for young musicians in 2010. Merel's career as a soloist and chamber musician took off in the years following her graduation from the Royal Conservatory. She has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Jaap van Zweden, and Bernard Haitink. In addition to her work as a soloist, Merel is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Quatuor Ebène, and the Jerusalem Quartet. She is also a founding member of the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam, a critically acclaimed string quartet that has won numerous awards and performed at major venues around the world. Merel's talent as a conductor has also been recognized in recent years. In 2017, she was appointed as the principal conductor of the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the orchestra's history. She has also conducted many other orchestras, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestre National de Lille. Merel's performances have been praised for their technical brilliance, musicality, and emotional depth. She is known for her ability to bring out the best in the music she plays, whether it is a virtuosic solo piece or a complex chamber work. Her interpretations are marked by a deep understanding of the composer's intentions and a sensitivity to the nuances of the music. Merel's recordings have also received critical acclaim. Her debut album, featuring works by Bach and Ysaÿe, was released in 2013 to widespread praise. She has since released several other albums, including a recording of Mozart's violin concertos with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and a recording of Schubert's String Quintet with the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam. Merel's contributions to the world of classical music have not gone unnoticed. In addition to the awards she has received for her performances, she has also been recognized for her work as a mentor and educator. She has taught at several music schools and conservatories, including the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
