Michael Burritt is a renowned percussionist and professor of music at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He was born on September 23, 1960, in Rockford, Illinois, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a high school band director, and his mother was a piano teacher. Burritt began playing percussion at a young age and quickly developed a passion for classical music. Burritt attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan. Throughout his career, Burritt has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also been a featured soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his work as a performer, Burritt is also a highly respected educator. He has been a professor of music at the Eastman School of Music since 1995 and has taught masterclasses and clinics at universities and conservatories around the world. He is also the author of several books on percussion technique and pedagogy. One of the highlights of Burritt's career was his performance of Joseph Schwantner's Percussion Concerto with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 1997.
