Born on August 17, 1927, in Melbourne, Australia, Humble showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied composition and conducting at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, where he was awarded the prestigious John Tallis Scholarship. After completing his studies, Humble moved to Europe to further his musical education. He studied composition with Olivier Messiaen in Paris and conducting with Hermann Scherchen in Switzerland. During this time, he also worked as a freelance composer and conductor, collaborating with various orchestras and ensembles across Europe. In 1958, Humble was appointed as the conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for three years. During his tenure, he introduced many contemporary works to the orchestra's repertoire, including pieces by Australian composers such as Peter Sculthorpe and Don Banks. In 1961, Humble moved to the United States to take up a position as a lecturer in composition at the University of Illinois. He later became a professor of music at the University of California, San Diego, where he taught for over two decades. During his time at UCSD, he founded the university's electronic music studio and was instrumental in establishing the school's reputation as a center for experimental music. As a composer, Humble was known for his innovative use of electronic and computer-generated sounds. His works often combined traditional orchestral instruments with electronic elements, creating a unique and distinctive sound. Some of his most notable compositions include "Sinfonia Concertante" for orchestra and tape, "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," and "Music for a Summer Evening" for chamber ensemble and tape. In 1970, he was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for Music Composition.
