The Netherlands Saxophone Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1987 by four young saxophonists who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the possibilities of the saxophone as a classical instrument. The founding members of the Netherlands Saxophone Quartet were Arno Bornkamp (soprano saxophone), Johan van der Linden (alto saxophone), Willem van Merwijk (tenor saxophone), and Harry Cherrin (baritone saxophone). All four musicians had studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. From the beginning, the Netherlands Saxophone Quartet set out to expand the repertoire for saxophone quartet by commissioning new works from contemporary composers and arranging existing classical pieces for their ensemble. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming and their ability to bring out the unique qualities of each member's instrument. One of the quartet's early highlights was their performance at the 1988 World Saxophone Congress in Valencia, Spain, where they received critical acclaim for their interpretation of works by Bach, Debussy, and Piazzolla. This performance helped to establish the Netherlands Saxophone Quartet as one of the leading ensembles in the world of classical saxophone. Over the years, the quartet has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible with the saxophone, collaborating with composers and musicians from a wide range of genres and backgrounds. They have premiered works by such notable composers as Louis Andriessen, Guus Janssen, and Jacob ter Veldhuis, and have worked with jazz musicians like John Surman and Mike del Ferro. In addition to their work as a performing ensemble, the members of the Netherlands Saxophone Quartet are also highly respected teachers and mentors. They have taught at conservatories and universities around the world, and have led masterclasses and workshops for saxophonists of all levels. Throughout their career, the Netherlands Saxophone Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. They have won the prestigious Dutch Music Prize, the highest honor for a musician in the Netherlands, and have been nominated for a Grammy Award for their album "Dancing in the Dark," which features their arrangements of works by Duke Ellington. Some of the quartet's most memorable performances include their appearances at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Berliner Festwochen, and the Salzburg Festival. They have also performed with major orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In recent years, the Netherlands Saxophone Quartet has continued to innovate and explore new musical territory. They have collaborated with visual artists and dancers to create multimedia performances, and have experimented with new technologies to create immersive soundscapes. Despite their many achievements, the members of the Netherlands Saxophone Quartet remain committed to their original mission of expanding the repertoire for saxophone quartet and bringing the unique sound of their ensemble to audiences around the world.
