The Drolc Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1998 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create something unique and special. The founding members of the Drolc Quartet were violinists Matija Drolc and Mojca Jerman, violist Katarina Kozjek, and cellist Karmen Pečar. All four musicians had already established themselves as accomplished performers in their own right, having studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in Europe and performed with various orchestras and ensembles. The quartet's name, Drolc, is derived from the surname of its founder and first violinist, Matija Drolc. The name also has a symbolic meaning, as it represents the four musicians coming together to form a cohesive unit, much like the four strings of a quartet. From the very beginning, the Drolc Quartet set out to explore the vast repertoire of chamber music, from the classical works of Mozart and Haydn to the more contemporary pieces of Shostakovich and Bartok. Their dedication to their craft and their exceptional musicianship quickly earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting and dynamic chamber music ensembles in Europe. Over the years, the Drolc Quartet has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Salzburg Festival. They have also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians of our time, including pianist Martha Argerich and cellist Mischa Maisky. One of the highlights of the Drolc Quartet's career was their performance at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, where they played for an audience of millions. The quartet also received critical acclaim for their recording of the complete string quartets of Shostakovich, which was released in 2008 and hailed as a landmark achievement in the world of classical music. In addition to their performances, the Drolc Quartet is also committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians. They regularly hold masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and have served as mentors to many aspiring chamber music ensembles. Throughout their career, the Drolc Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades for their exceptional performances and contributions to the world of classical music. They have been honored with the Slovenian Prešeren Award, the highest cultural award in Slovenia, and have been named Cultural Ambassadors of the Republic of Slovenia. Despite their many achievements, the Drolc Quartet remains humble and dedicated to their craft. They continue to push the boundaries of chamber music and inspire audiences around the world with their exceptional performances.
