The Kertész Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1983 by four talented musicians, all of whom were students at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. The founding members of the Kertész Quartet were violinists János Pilz and András Kemenes, violist Gábor Fias, and cellist György Éder. The quartet was named after the legendary Hungarian conductor, István Kertész, who was a close friend and mentor to the founding members. From the very beginning, the Kertész Quartet was committed to excellence in performance and musicianship. They quickly gained recognition for their exceptional talent and were invited to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Musikverein in Vienna. Over the years, the Kertész Quartet has undergone some changes in its membership. In 1992, violist Gábor Fias left the quartet and was replaced by violist János Selmeczi. In 2008, cellist György Éder retired from the quartet and was replaced by cellist Tamás Mérei. Despite these changes, the Kertész Quartet has maintained its commitment to excellence and has continued to captivate audiences with their exceptional performances. The quartet has won numerous awards and accolades throughout their career, including the prestigious Bartók-Pásztory Award in 1986 and the Hungarian State Prize in 1996. One of the highlights of the Kertész Quartet's career was their performance at the 1992 Salzburg Festival, where they performed the complete string quartets of Béla Bartók. The quartet's performance was widely praised by critics and cemented their reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Bartók's music. The Kertész Quartet has also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians in the world, including pianist Zoltán Kocsis, violinist Midori, and cellist Miklós Perényi. Their collaborations have resulted in some of the most memorable performances in the history of classical music. In addition to their performances, the Kertész Quartet has also made numerous recordings throughout their career. Their recordings of the complete string quartets of Béla Bartók and Franz Schubert are considered to be some of the finest recordings of these works.
