The Sea Chanters is a United States Navy chorus that specializes in performing traditional sea shanties and patriotic songs. The group was formed in 1956 and has since become one of the most renowned classical music artists in the country. The Sea Chanters were born out of a desire to preserve the rich musical heritage of the United States Navy. The group was initially composed of just eight members, but it quickly grew in size and popularity. The Sea Chanters were soon performing at military ceremonies, public events, and even on television. One of the highlights of the Sea Chanters' early career was their performance at the 1960 Republican National Convention. The group sang a rousing rendition of "Anchors Aweigh" that brought the crowd to its feet. This performance helped to establish the Sea Chanters as one of the premier classical music artists in the country. Over the years, the Sea Chanters have performed at countless events and venues. They have sung at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and the Lincoln Memorial. They have also performed for foreign dignitaries and heads of state, including Queen Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II. In addition to their live performances, the Sea Chanters have also recorded several albums. Their first album, "Songs of the Sea," was released in 1962 and featured traditional sea shanties and naval songs. Since then, the group has released several more albums, including "Patriotic Songs of America" and "Christmas with the Sea Chanters." The Sea Chanters have received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1980, they were awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for their outstanding contributions to the Navy's public affairs mission. They have also been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Smithsonian Institution. One of the most memorable performances in the Sea Chanters' history took place in 2001, just months after the September 11th terrorist attacks. The group performed a moving rendition of "America the Beautiful" at the Pentagon Memorial Service, which was attended by President George W. Bush and other dignitaries. Today, the Sea Chanters continue to perform and inspire audiences around the world. They are a testament to the power of music to bring people together and to honor the traditions and values of the United States Navy.
