He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Peter showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later learned to play the violin and the trumpet. Peter attended the Royal Manchester College of Music, where he studied composition with Richard Hall. He also studied conducting with Sir John Barbirolli and trumpet with Ernest Hall. After completing his studies, Peter worked as a freelance musician, playing the trumpet in various orchestras and bands. In the 1950s, Peter began composing music for television and radio. He wrote music for popular shows such as "The Benny Hill Show" and "The Morecambe and Wise Show". He also composed music for documentaries and films. Peter's first major work was his "Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra", which he composed in 1966. The concerto was premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, with Peter playing the solo trumpet part. The concerto was well-received and established Peter as a composer to watch. In the 1970s, Peter began composing music for the theatre. He wrote the music for several productions, including "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "The Rivals". He also composed the music for the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "The Tempest". Peter's most famous work is his "Ring of Kerry Suite", which he composed in 1984. The suite is a collection of six pieces of music inspired by the landscape and culture of the Ring of Kerry in Ireland. The suite was premiered by the BBC Concert Orchestra and has since been performed by orchestras all over the world. The suite is considered to be one of the most popular pieces of classical music of the 20th century. Peter continued to compose music throughout his life, writing music for television, radio, and the theatre.
