Lucia Micallef is a Maltese classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a pianist, accompanist, and music educator. Born on 22nd September 1982 in Malta, Lucia showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue her passion for music. Lucia's musical education began at the Johann Strauss School of Music in Malta, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Maria Dolores Azzopardi. She later went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree with Honours in Piano Performance. She continued her studies at the same institution and obtained a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Accompaniment. Throughout her career, Lucia has performed in numerous concerts and recitals both in Malta and abroad. She has collaborated with various musicians and ensembles, including the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, the Manchester Camerata, and the Royal Northern College of Music Symphony Orchestra. Some of her most notable performances include her solo recital at the Malta International Arts Festival in 2015, her performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016, and her recital at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester in 2017. Lucia has also received several awards and accolades for her musical achievements. In 2004, she was awarded the prestigious Malta Government Scholarship for the Arts, which allowed her to further her studies in the UK. In 2006, she won the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship, which enabled her to attend the International Summer Academy in Salzburg, Austria. In 2010, she was awarded the Royal Northern College of Music's Gold Medal, which is the highest accolade that the institution can bestow upon a student. Apart from her performing career, Lucia is also a dedicated music educator. She has taught piano and music theory at various institutions in Malta and the UK, including the Johann Strauss School of Music, the Malta School of Music, and the Royal Northern College of Music. She is currently a lecturer in piano and music theory at the University of Malta's School of Performing Arts. Lucia's repertoire is diverse and includes works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, as well as contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and Philip Glass. She is particularly passionate about promoting Maltese music and has performed works by Maltese composers such as Charles Camilleri and Joseph Vella. In addition to her performing and teaching commitments, Lucia is also actively involved in promoting classical music in Malta. She has organized and participated in various concerts and events aimed at introducing classical music to a wider audience. She is a member of the Malta Association for Contemporary Music and has served as a jury member for various music competitions in Malta.
