María Elena Barrientos was a renowned classical music artist who was born on March 15, 1884, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She was the daughter of a Spanish father and a Puerto Rican mother. Her father was a musician who played the guitar and the piano, and he introduced her to music at a young age. Barrientos showed a natural talent for singing, and her father encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Barrientos began her formal music education at the age of 12 when she enrolled in the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. She studied under the tutelage of Antonio Paoli, a famous tenor who was also from Puerto Rico. Paoli recognized Barrientos' talent and took her under his wing, teaching her the techniques of bel canto singing. In 1902, Barrientos moved to New York City to further her music education. She studied at the National Conservatory of Music under the guidance of famous composers and conductors such as Antonín Dvořák and Walter Damrosch. During her time in New York, Barrientos also performed in various concerts and recitals, gaining recognition for her exceptional voice and stage presence. Barrientos made her professional debut in 1909 at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She performed the role of Gilda in Verdi's opera Rigoletto, and her performance was met with critical acclaim. This marked the beginning of Barrientos' international career, and she went on to perform in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. One of Barrientos' most notable performances was in 1910 when she sang the role of Lucia in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Colón. Her performance was so impressive that the audience demanded an encore of the famous mad scene aria, "Il dolce suono." Barrientos obliged, and her rendition of the aria became one of her signature pieces. Barrientos was known for her exceptional vocal range, which spanned three octaves. She was particularly renowned for her ability to sing high notes with ease and clarity. Her voice was described as "pure and crystalline," and she was praised for her impeccable technique and musicality. Throughout her career, Barrientos received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to classical music. In 1913, she was awarded the Order of Isabella the Catholic by King Alfonso XIII of Spain for her services to Spanish culture. She was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Società del Quartetto in Milan in 1920 and the Medal of Honor of the National Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico in 1934. Barrientos continued to perform well into her 60s, and she retired from the stage in 1950. She returned to Puerto Rico, where she lived out the rest of her life.
