The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) is a classical music ensemble based in New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1894, the orchestra has a rich history of providing high-quality performances to the community and has become a staple of the New Haven arts scene. The NHSO was founded by a group of local musicians who wanted to create a professional orchestra in New Haven. The group was led by Horatio William Parker, a composer and conductor who had previously served as the director of music at Yale University. The orchestra's first concert was held on December 4, 1894, and featured works by Beethoven, Wagner, and Parker himself. Over the years, the NHSO has had many talented musicians and conductors as members. Some of the most notable include Gustav Meier, who served as the orchestra's music director from 1979 to 1998, and William Boughton, who served as music director from 2007 to 2019. The orchestra's current music director is Alasdair Neale, who began his tenure in 2019. Throughout its history, the NHSO has performed a wide range of repertoire, from classical works by Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary pieces by living composers. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. One of the NHSO's most notable performances was its 100th anniversary concert, which was held in 1994. The concert featured a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, as well as a commissioned work by composer Joan Tower. The orchestra also performed at the inauguration of Yale University's president, Peter Salovey, in 2013. In addition to its performances, the NHSO has also been recognized for its contributions to the community. The orchestra has received numerous awards and grants, including the National Endowment for the Arts' American Masterpieces grant in 2008. The orchestra has also been involved in many educational programs, including its Music in the Schools program, which provides music education to students in the New Haven area.
