Born in New York City in 1945, Zaslav grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, Bernard Zaslav, was a violist, and her mother, Lillian Fuchs, was a violist and composer. Zaslav's parents were both members of the New York Philharmonic, and they instilled in her a love for music from a young age. Zaslav began playing the viola at the age of six, and by the time she was a teenager, she was already performing professionally. She studied at the Juilliard School of Music, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1966. She continued her studies at the Yale School of Music, where she earned her Master of Music degree in 1968. Zaslav's career as a professional musician began in the early 1970s, when she joined the New York Philharmonic as a violist. She remained with the orchestra for several years, during which time she also performed with other orchestras and chamber music groups. In 1976, she joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a violist, and she remained with the orchestra until 1985. During her time with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Zaslav also began to establish herself as a soloist and chamber musician. She performed with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and the Marlboro Music Festival. She also made several recordings, including a critically acclaimed album of Mozart's viola quintets with the Guarneri Quartet. In 1985, Zaslav left the Boston Symphony Orchestra to focus on her solo and chamber music career. She continued to perform with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Marlboro Music Festival, and she also began to teach at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1990, she joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, where she remains a professor of viola to this day. Throughout her career, Zaslav has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the world of music. In 1981, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise. In 1994, she was awarded the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, which is given to outstanding chamber music ensembles. She has also been awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant and the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant. Zaslav's performances have been praised for their technical skill and emotional depth. She is known for her ability to bring out the nuances and subtleties of the music she plays, and for her ability to connect with audiences on a deep level. Her recordings have been widely praised for their clarity and beauty of sound, and she is considered one of the finest violists of her generation. In addition to her work as a performer and teacher, Zaslav is also a dedicated advocate for the arts. She has served on the boards of several arts organizations, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Marlboro Music Festival. She has also been a guest lecturer at several universities and music schools, where she has spoken about the importance of music education and the role of the arts in society. In conclusion, Naomi Zaslav is a highly respected and accomplished classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music.More....
