She was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a pianist, and her father played the violin. Caldwell began playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the violin and viola. Caldwell attended the University of Arkansas, where she studied music and theater. She later transferred to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she earned a degree in music education. After graduation, she worked as a music teacher in public schools in Massachusetts. In 1952, Caldwell founded the Boston Opera Group, which later became the Opera Company of Boston. She served as the company's artistic director and conductor for over three decades. Under her leadership, the company became known for its innovative productions and commitment to contemporary opera. Caldwell made her conducting debut in 1957 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She went on to conduct many other orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Caldwell was also a renowned opera director. She directed productions at many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. Her productions were known for their attention to detail and their ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music. One of Caldwell's most notable productions was her 1976 staging of Wagner's "Ring" cycle at the Metropolitan Opera. The production was the first complete "Ring" cycle to be staged at the Met in over 20 years, and it was widely praised for its innovative staging and powerful performances. Caldwell was also a champion of contemporary opera. She commissioned and premiered many new works, including John Adams' "Nixon in China" and Philip Glass' "Akhnaten." She was known for her ability to work closely with composers and to bring their visions to life on stage. Throughout her career, Caldwell received many awards and honors. She was the first woman to conduct at the Metropolitan Opera, and she was also the first woman to conduct at the Vienna State Opera. She received the National Medal of Arts in 1985 and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1991. Caldwell continued to work in the opera world until her death in 2006. She was a trailblazer for women in classical music and a visionary artist who pushed the boundaries of what was possible on the opera stage.
