Born on August 22, 1960, in Akron, Ohio, Stees grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. Stees started playing the bassoon at the age of 12 and quickly fell in love with the instrument. Stees attended the University of Akron, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in bassoon performance. He then went on to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree in bassoon performance. Stees continued his studies at the University of Southern California, where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in bassoon performance. Stees began his professional career as the principal bassoonist of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. He then went on to become the principal bassoonist of the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra. In 1995, Stees joined the Cleveland Orchestra as the assistant principal bassoonist. He was promoted to principal bassoonist in 2001, a position he still holds today. Stees has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra, the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, and the Akron Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed as a chamber musician with the Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Players, the Cleveland Quintet, and the Cleveland Duo. Stees has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1990, he was awarded the top prize at the International Double Reed Society's Young Artist Competition. In 1991, he was awarded the top prize at the Fernand Gillet-Hugo Fox International Bassoon Competition. In 1992, he was awarded the top prize at the William Waterhouse International Bassoon Competition. Stees has also been recognized for his teaching. He has served on the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music, the University of Akron, and the Kent/Blossom Music Festival. He has also given masterclasses and clinics at many universities and music schools throughout the United States. Stees is known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the beauty and expressiveness of the bassoon. He has recorded several albums, including "Bassoon Transcriptions," "Bassoon Music of the Americas," and "Bassoon Music of the 20th Century." In addition to his work as a musician, Stees is also an avid cyclist. He has participated in several long-distance cycling events, including the Ride Across Ohio and the Ride Across Indiana.
