Kamala Chakravarti was a renowned classical music artist who was born on January 15, 1934, in Kolkata, India. She was born into a family of musicians, and her father, Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh, was a well-known tabla player and music composer. Kamala grew up in an environment that was steeped in music, and she started learning music at a very young age. Kamala's father was her first guru, and he taught her the basics of music. She started learning the sitar when she was just six years old, and she showed a natural talent for the instrument. Kamala's father recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue music seriously. Kamala's formal training in music began when she was eight years old, and she started learning from the legendary sitar player, Ustad Vilayat Khan. Under his tutelage, Kamala honed her skills and developed a unique style of playing the sitar. She also learned the intricacies of Indian classical music and became proficient in playing ragas. Kamala's talent soon caught the attention of music lovers, and she started performing at various concerts and music festivals. Her performances were highly appreciated, and she soon became a sought-after artist. Kamala's first major performance was at the All India Music Conference in 1952, where she played the raga Yaman. Her performance was highly acclaimed, and she received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the years, Kamala performed at several prestigious music festivals and concerts in India and abroad. Some of her notable performances include the Edinburgh Festival in 1966, the Festival of India in the United States in 1985, and the Festival of India in the Soviet Union in 1987. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974 and the Padma Bhushan in 2003 by the Government of India. She was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 and the Tansen Samman in 2001.
