Donald Palumbo is a renowned conductor and chorus master in the world of classical music. Born in 1953 in New York City, Palumbo grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. His father was a professional musician, and his mother was a dancer. Palumbo began studying music at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he knew that he wanted to pursue a career in music. Palumbo attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied conducting and voice. After graduating, he began working as a freelance conductor and chorus master, working with a variety of orchestras and choirs throughout the United States. In 1980, he was appointed the chorus master of the New York City Opera, a position he held for 15 years. During his time at the New York City Opera, Palumbo worked on a number of productions, including the world premiere of Philip Glass's "The Voyage" and the American premiere of Hans Werner Henze's "The English Cat." He also worked with a number of renowned conductors, including Julius Rudel, Christopher Keene, and George Manahan. In 1995, Palumbo was appointed the chorus master of the Metropolitan Opera, one of the most prestigious opera companies in the world. In this role, he has worked on a number of productions, including Wagner's "Ring" cycle, Verdi's "Aida," and Puccini's "Turandot." He has also worked with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including James Levine, Valery Gergiev, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Palumbo has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2003, he was awarded the American Choral Directors Association's Julius Herford Prize for outstanding choral conducting. In 2010, he was awarded the Ditson Conductor's Award, which is given annually to a conductor who has demonstrated a commitment to the performance of American music. In addition to his work as a conductor and chorus master, Palumbo is also a sought-after teacher and lecturer. He has taught at a number of institutions, including the Manhattan School of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Curtis Institute of Music. He has also given lectures and masterclasses at a number of universities and conservatories throughout the United States. Palumbo is known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his singers and musicians.
