His father was a classical violinist, and his mother was a singer. Kühn started playing the piano at the age of five and showed a natural talent for music. Kühn's family moved to Frankfurt when he was ten years old, and he continued his music education there. He studied classical piano at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt and later at the Paris Conservatory. In 1969, Kühn formed a trio with bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark and drummer Daniel Humair. The trio became one of the most influential jazz groups in Europe and recorded several albums together. Kühn also recorded solo albums and collaborated with other musicians such as John McLaughlin, Archie Shepp, and Michael Brecker. Kühn's music has been recognized with several awards and honors.
