Camerata of St. Andrew is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1974 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The group was formed by a group of musicians who were passionate about performing classical music and wanted to share their love of the genre with others. The ensemble has since become one of the most respected and well-known classical music groups in Hawaii. The founding members of Camerata of St. Andrew were all accomplished musicians who had studied and performed classical music for many years. They included violinists Iwao Furusawa and James Stanford, violist James Moffitt, cellist David Wong, and pianist Thomas Yee. These musicians were all members of the St. Andrew's Cathedral Choir, and they decided to form the ensemble as a way to perform more challenging and complex music than what was typically performed by the choir. Over the years, the membership of Camerata of St. Andrew has changed, but the group has always maintained a high level of musical excellence. The current members of the ensemble include violinists Ignace Jang and Duane Padilla, violist Anna Womack, cellist Joanna Morrison-Pernela, and pianist Thomas Yee. All of these musicians are highly skilled and experienced performers who have played with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. Camerata of St. Andrew has performed a wide range of classical music over the years, including works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and many others. The group has also commissioned and premiered new works by contemporary composers, including Hawaii-based composers Robert Pollock and Donald Reid Womack. One of the highlights of Camerata of St. Andrew's career was their performance at the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles. The group was invited to perform as part of the festival's classical music program, and they received rave reviews for their performance. The Los Angeles Times called the group "a polished and accomplished ensemble" and praised their "impeccable musicianship." Camerata of St. Andrew has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1990, the group was awarded the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Award for Excellence in the Arts. In 2004, they were awarded the Honolulu Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. And in 2014, they were honored with the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to their performances, Camerata of St. Andrew is also committed to music education and outreach. The group regularly performs for school groups and community organizations, and they have also established a scholarship program for young musicians in Hawaii.
