Hebrides Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in Scotland. The ensemble was founded in 1991 by cellist and artistic director, William Conway. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming and collaborations with contemporary composers. The ensemble's founding members included William Conway, violinist Clio Gould, violist James Boyd, and pianist Susan Tomes. Over the years, the ensemble has had a rotating cast of musicians, but the core members have remained the same. Hebrides Ensemble has performed at major venues and festivals throughout the UK and Europe, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Wigmore Hall. The ensemble has also toured extensively in North America and Asia. One of the ensemble's most notable collaborations was with composer James MacMillan. Hebrides Ensemble premiered several of MacMillan's works, including his chamber opera, "The Sacrifice." The ensemble also recorded a CD of MacMillan's chamber music, which was released on the Delphian label. In addition to their work with contemporary composers, Hebrides Ensemble has also performed works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. The ensemble's performances of these works have been praised for their clarity and precision. Hebrides Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2002, the ensemble was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Chamber Music. The ensemble has also been nominated for several Scottish BAFTA awards for their recordings. In recent years, Hebrides Ensemble has continued to push the boundaries of classical music. The ensemble has collaborated with electronic musicians and visual artists to create multimedia performances that blend classical and contemporary music. Overall, Hebrides Ensemble has established itself as one of the leading classical music ensembles in Scotland and the UK. The ensemble's innovative programming and collaborations with contemporary composers have helped to bring classical music to new audiences and keep the genre relevant in the 21st century.
