Born in 1960 in Seattle, Washington, Lees grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Lees showed a keen interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Lees received his early music education from his father, who was his first violin teacher. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. He then continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he earned his Master of Music degree. After completing his studies, Lees began his professional career as a violinist. He joined the Cleveland Orchestra in 1986 as the assistant concertmaster. He held this position for two years before being promoted to the position of concertmaster in 1988. Lees held this position for 22 years, making him the longest-serving concertmaster in the history of the Cleveland Orchestra. During his tenure with the Cleveland Orchestra, Lees performed in numerous concerts and made several recordings. He also collaborated with many renowned conductors, including Christoph von Dohnányi, Pierre Boulez, and Franz Welser-Möst. Lees was known for his exceptional musicianship and his ability to lead the orchestra with his playing. Lees has also performed as a soloist with many orchestras around the world.
