Jeremy Bruns is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a pianist, composer, and conductor. Born in 1980 in New York City, Bruns showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a composer. Bruns received his early musical training at the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where he studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky. He later went on to earn his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Douglas Humpherys. Bruns continued his studies at the Yale School of Music, where he earned his Master of Music degree and studied with Boris Berman. As a pianist, Bruns has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. He has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and the Yale Philharmonia. Bruns has also given recitals at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Wigmore Hall in London. In addition to his work as a pianist, Bruns is also an accomplished composer. His compositions have been performed by a variety of ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the American Composers Orchestra, and the Yale Philharmonia. Bruns has received numerous awards and honors for his compositions, including the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award. Bruns is also an active conductor, having led numerous orchestras and ensembles. He has served as the music director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra and the New Haven Chamber Orchestra, and has guest conducted orchestras such as the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York Youth Symphony. One of the highlights of Bruns' career as a pianist was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 2009. The performance was praised by critics for its "poise, elegance, and sensitivity." Bruns has also received critical acclaim for his performances of works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Schumann. As a composer, Bruns has received numerous commissions from ensembles and organizations such as the New York Philharmonic, the American Composers Orchestra, and the Yale School of Music. One of his most notable compositions is his Piano Concerto, which was premiered by the Yale Philharmonia in 2007. The concerto was praised by critics for its "lyricism, virtuosity, and emotional depth." Bruns' work as a conductor has also been widely praised. In 2010, he led the Yale Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 5, which was described by critics as "powerful and moving." Bruns has also been praised for his ability to bring out the best in young musicians, and for his commitment to promoting new music. Throughout his career, Bruns has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a musician. In addition to the awards mentioned above, he has also received the William Schuman Prize from the BMI Foundation and the Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
