The Switch Ensemble is a contemporary classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 by a group of musicians who were passionate about exploring new and innovative approaches to music-making. The ensemble is based in San Francisco, California, and is made up of a core group of six musicians, including soprano Stacey Fraser, flutist and artistic director Jeff Anderle, clarinetist and executive director Madison Greenstone, pianist and composer Mark Clifford, percussionist and composer Fernando Rocha, and violinist and composer Kate Outterbridge. The Switch Ensemble has quickly established itself as one of the most exciting and dynamic new music ensembles in the United States, with a reputation for performing challenging and innovative works by contemporary composers from around the world. One of the highlights of the Switch Ensemble's early career was its participation in the 2013 Bang on a Can Summer Festival, where the ensemble worked closely with some of the most influential composers and performers in contemporary music, including Steve Reich, Julia Wolfe, and David Lang. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of composers and performers, including Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, experimental electronic musician Dan Deacon, and the acclaimed new music ensemble Eighth Blackbird. In addition to its performances, the Switch Ensemble is also committed to education and outreach, and the ensemble regularly works with students and young musicians to help inspire the next generation of performers and composers. The ensemble has also been recognized for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, and it has been awarded grants and funding from a wide range of organizations and foundations, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
