Capella Thuringia is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their performances for over two decades. The group was founded in 1991 by the German conductor and harpsichordist Bernhard Klapprott, who remains the artistic director of the ensemble to this day. Klapprott was born in 1959 in the German city of Kassel. He began his musical studies at a young age, learning to play the piano and the organ. He later studied conducting and harpsichord at the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt, where he graduated with honors. After completing his studies, Klapprott began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras and ensembles throughout Germany. In 1991, he founded Capella Thuringia, which quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances of Baroque and Classical music. The ensemble takes its name from the region of Thuringia in central Germany, which has a rich musical heritage dating back to the time of Johann Sebastian Bach. Capella Thuringia has made it their mission to preserve and promote this musical tradition, performing works by Bach, Handel, Telemann, and other composers of the Baroque era. Over the years, Capella Thuringia has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Leipzig Bach Festival. They have also toured extensively throughout Germany and other parts of Europe, as well as in Asia and North America. One of the highlights of Capella Thuringia's career was their performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where Bach himself served as the music director for many years. The performance was hailed as a triumph, with critics praising the ensemble's precision, clarity, and emotional depth. Capella Thuringia has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings, including the prestigious Echo Klassik award. Their recordings of Bach's cantatas and Handel's oratorios have been particularly well-received, earning praise for their authenticity and musicality. In addition to their performances and recordings, Capella Thuringia is also committed to music education and outreach. They regularly hold workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and have collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. Overall, Capella Thuringia has established itself as one of the leading ensembles in the world of Baroque and Classical music. With their impeccable musicianship, deep understanding of the music, and commitment to preserving and promoting the musical heritage of Thuringia, they continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
