The group was founded in 1991 by the German conductor and harpsichordist Bernhard Klapprott, who remains the artistic director of the ensemble to this day. Klapprott was born in 1959 in the German city of Kassel. He began his musical studies at a young age, learning to play the piano and the organ. He later studied conducting and harpsichord at the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt, where he graduated with honors. After completing his studies, Klapprott began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras and ensembles throughout Germany. In 1991, he founded Capella Thuringia, which quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances of Baroque and Classical music. The ensemble takes its name from the region of Thuringia in central Germany, which has a rich musical heritage dating back to the time of Johann Sebastian Bach. Capella Thuringia has made it their mission to preserve and promote this musical tradition, performing works by Bach, Handel, Telemann, and other composers of the Baroque era. Over the years, Capella Thuringia has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Leipzig Bach Festival.
