The group was formed by a group of young musicians who were passionate about classical music and wanted to create a platform to showcase their talents. Over the years, Musica Metropolitana has become one of the most renowned classical music ensembles in Mexico, known for their exceptional performances and innovative programming. The ensemble's founding members included violinists Daniel Andai and Luis Enriquez, violist Jorge Risi, cellist Carlos Prieto, and pianist Edith Ruiz. These musicians had all studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians in their own right. However, they saw the potential to create something special by coming together as a group. From the beginning, Musica Metropolitana set out to challenge the traditional boundaries of classical music. They were interested in exploring new repertoire, experimenting with different musical styles, and collaborating with artists from other disciplines. This approach quickly earned them a reputation as a dynamic and innovative ensemble. One of the highlights of Musica Metropolitana's early career was their performance at the Festival Internacional Cervantino in 1992. This prestigious festival, which takes place in Guanajuato, Mexico, is one of the most important cultural events in Latin America. Musica Metropolitana's performance was a huge success, and they were invited back to the festival several times over the years. In 1994, Musica Metropolitana released their first album, which featured works by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas. The album was well-received by critics and helped to establish the ensemble as an important interpreter of Mexican classical music. Over the years, Musica Metropolitana has continued to champion the works of Mexican composers, while also exploring a wide range of repertoire from around the world. One of the hallmarks of Musica Metropolitana's performances is their commitment to collaboration. They have worked with a wide range of artists, including dancers, actors, and visual artists. In 2000, they collaborated with the Mexican dance company Tania Pérez-Salas Compañía de Danza on a production called "3x3." The show featured three works by Pérez-Salas, each set to music by a different composer. Musica Metropolitana performed live on stage, creating a seamless integration of music and dance. In addition to their collaborations with other artists, Musica Metropolitana has also worked with a number of guest conductors over the years. These have included renowned conductors such as Enrique Diemecke, Carlos Miguel Prieto, and Alondra de la Parra. These collaborations have allowed the ensemble to explore new repertoire and to bring fresh perspectives to their performances. Musica Metropolitana has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1996, they were awarded the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in the field of artistic creation and interpretation. This prestigious award is given by the Mexican government to individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the arts and sciences. Musica Metropolitana was recognized for their innovative programming and their commitment to promoting Mexican classical music.
