Apartment House is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in London, England. The group was founded in 1995 by cellist Anton Lukoszevieze, who remains the artistic director and principal cellist of the ensemble. Lukoszevieze was born in London in 1965 and began playing the cello at the age of eight. He studied at the Royal College of Music and later at the University of York, where he earned a PhD in composition. In addition to his work with Apartment House, Lukoszevieze has performed with numerous other ensembles and has commissioned and premiered works by many contemporary composers. The early years of Apartment House were marked by a focus on experimental and avant-garde music. The ensemble's first performance, in 1995, featured works by John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Christian Wolff. Over the years, the group has continued to champion new and challenging music, while also exploring a wide range of styles and genres. One of the highlights of Apartment House's early years was a performance at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in 1998. The ensemble presented a program of works by composers such as Alvin Lucier, James Tenney, and Michael Parsons, earning critical acclaim for their innovative and daring approach to contemporary music. In the years that followed, Apartment House continued to perform at major festivals and venues throughout Europe and the United States. The ensemble's repertoire expanded to include works by composers such as John Zorn, Cornelius Cardew, and Terry Riley, as well as contemporary classical music from around the world. One of the most notable performances in Apartment House's history took place in 2009, when the ensemble presented a program of works by the American composer Morton Feldman at the Barbican Centre in London. The concert, which featured several of Feldman's rarely-performed chamber works, was widely praised for its sensitive and nuanced interpretations. In addition to their work as performers, members of Apartment House have also been active as composers and educators. Lukoszevieze has written numerous works for the ensemble, and other members have contributed compositions as well. The group has also conducted workshops and masterclasses for students and emerging composers. Over the years, Apartment House has received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2005, the ensemble was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Music Award, and in 2012 they were named Ensemble of the Year at the Scottish Awards for New Music. The group has also been praised by critics and audiences alike for their virtuosic playing and adventurous programming. Today, Apartment House remains one of the most respected and innovative ensembles in the world of contemporary classical music. With a commitment to exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of traditional musical forms, the group continues to inspire and challenge audiences around the globe.
