Born in Moscow, Russia, on August 22, 1957, Osadchy grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Viktor Osadchy, was a well-known cellist and professor at the Moscow Conservatory, and his mother, Natalia Shakhovskaya, was a renowned cellist and conductor. Osadchy began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed exceptional talent. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory under the tutelage of his father and graduated with honors in 1980. During his time at the conservatory, Osadchy won several prestigious awards, including the First Prize at the All-Union Competition for Young Musicians in 1975 and the First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978. After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory, Osadchy joined the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra as a principal cellist. He also performed as a soloist with various orchestras in Russia and abroad, including the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1990, Osadchy immigrated to Canada with his family and settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. He quickly established himself as one of the leading cellists in Canada and became a sought-after performer and teacher. He joined the faculty of the University of British Columbia School of Music in 1991 and has been teaching there ever since. Osadchy has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in many of the world's leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianists Anton Kuerti and Angela Cheng, violinists James Ehnes and Pinchas Zukerman, and conductors Bramwell Tovey and Sir Simon Rattle. Osadchy has also recorded extensively, with over 20 CDs to his credit. His recordings have received critical acclaim and have been featured on many radio stations around the world. Some of his most notable recordings include the complete works for cello and piano by Sergei Rachmaninoff, the complete works for cello and piano by Dmitri Shostakovich, and the complete works for cello and orchestra by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In addition to his performing career, Osadchy is also a dedicated music educator. He has taught at the University of British Columbia School of Music for over 30 years and has mentored many successful cellists. His students have won numerous awards and competitions, including the Canadian Music Competition, the National Music Festival, and the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Osadchy has also been a guest teacher and performer at many music festivals and institutions around the world, including the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Moscow Conservatory. He has given masterclasses in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia and has been a jury member for many international music competitions. Throughout his career, Osadchy has received many awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 2007, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors, for his achievements as a cellist and music educator.
