Antonio Lysy is a renowned cellist and professor of music at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Born in Argentina in 1964, Lysy was raised in a family of musicians. His father, Alberto Lysy, was a renowned violinist and conductor, and his mother, Carmen Bustamante, was a pianist. Lysy began playing the cello at the age of seven and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Lysy's early musical education was heavily influenced by his father, who was his first cello teacher. He later studied with some of the most prominent cellists of the time, including Bernard Greenhouse, William Pleeth, and Jacqueline du Pré. Lysy's musical education also included studies in composition and conducting. In 1981, Lysy won first prize in the National Cello Competition in Argentina, which launched his career as a soloist. He went on to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Lysy has also performed as a soloist in many of the world's most famous concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. In addition to his solo career, Lysy is also a dedicated chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Tokyo String Quartet, the Emerson String Quartet, and the Guarneri String Quartet. Lysy is also a founding member of the Lysy Trio, which includes his wife, pianist Inna Faliks, and violinist Movses Pogossian. Lysy's dedication to music education is also a significant part of his career. He has taught at many prestigious institutions, including the Royal Academy of Music in London, the University of Southern California, and the Colburn School in Los Angeles. Since 2007, Lysy has been a professor of music at UCLA, where he teaches cello and chamber music. Throughout his career, Lysy has received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1995, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the Bach Cello Suites. He has also been awarded the Pablo Casals Prize for his contributions to the cello repertoire and the Arts and Letters Award from the government of France. One of Lysy's most significant achievements was the creation of the "Bach Suites for Solo Cello: Music and Conversation" project. This project combines Lysy's performances of the Bach Cello Suites with lectures and discussions about the music. The project has been performed at many prestigious venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Lysy's dedication to music education and his passion for the cello have made him one of the most respected musicians of his generation. His performances and recordings have inspired countless young musicians, and his contributions to the classical music world will continue to be felt for many years to come.
