Born in Manchester, England, on May 17, 1976, Atherton grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a professional cellist, and her mother was a music teacher. From a young age, Atherton showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. Atherton's love for singing developed when she joined the choir at her local church. She quickly discovered that she had a natural talent for singing and began taking voice lessons. She went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance.
