William Waters was born on May 15, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Waters showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Waters received his formal music education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky. During his time at Juilliard, Waters won numerous awards and competitions, including the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. After graduating from Juilliard, Waters began his professional career as a concert pianist, performing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and dynamic pianists of his generation, known for his virtuosic technique and passionate interpretations of classical music. Throughout his career, Waters has collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also performed with many of the world's most renowned soloists, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Waters is also an accomplished chamber musician, having performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. Waters has recorded extensively throughout his career, with his recordings receiving critical acclaim and numerous awards. His recordings of the complete piano works of Chopin and Beethoven have been particularly well-received, with many critics praising his sensitive and nuanced interpretations of these iconic composers. In addition to his performing and recording career, Waters is also a dedicated teacher, having taught at the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. He is known for his passionate and inspiring teaching style, and many of his students have gone on to successful careers as professional musicians. Throughout his career, Waters has received numerous awards and honors, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Gilmore Artist Award, and the National Medal of Arts.
