Dreigroschenband is a classical music ensemble that was founded in Germany in 1985. The group is known for its unique blend of classical and contemporary music, as well as its innovative approach to performance. The founding members of Dreigroschenband were all graduates of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg. They were inspired to form the ensemble after attending a performance by the Kronos Quartet, which showcased the potential of classical music to be both experimental and accessible. The original members of Dreigroschenband were violinist Christiane Edinger, cellist Matthias Bartolomey, and pianist Andreas Woyke. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded to include additional musicians, including percussionist Matthias Kaul and clarinetist Jörg Widmann. One of the highlights of Dreigroschenband's career was their performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1992. The group performed a program of contemporary music, including works by György Ligeti and John Cage, to critical acclaim. This performance helped to establish Dreigroschenband as one of the leading ensembles in the contemporary classical music scene. In addition to their performances of contemporary music, Dreigroschenband has also gained recognition for their interpretations of classical works. The group has recorded several albums of chamber music by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. Dreigroschenband has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1996, the group was awarded the Echo Klassik award for their album "Brahms: Piano Quartets." They have also been recognized for their contributions to contemporary music, receiving the Siemens Music Prize in 2002. Despite their success, Dreigroschenband remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music. The group continues to perform and record new works by contemporary composers, as well as reinterpreting classical works in innovative ways.
